Alexander Laible Grauer Burgunder (Pinot Gris) Trocken 2015

Alexander Laible graduated as an Enologist from the Lehr-und Versuchsanstalt Weinsberg and worked for several years in the Mosel before returning to his hometown of Ortenau in 2004. Three years later at just 29, Alexander, son of renowned Durbach winemaker Andreas Laible, took control of his own vineyards on the edge of the village. In just a few years, this young winemaker has been awarded with numerous prizes including Best New Winemaker in Germany in 2010. Alexander’s wines combine minerality with pure, expressive fruit. Alexander Laible’s approach is a traditional and sensitive one in harmony with nature and environmentally friendly. Utilizing aspects of both biodynamic and conventional viticulture, Alexander makes use of lunar cycles and builds on his knowledge across the seasons and the years. All vineyards face south-west to take full advantage of sunshine hours and ventilation. Every step is carried out by hand, and physiological balance and sustainability are the keys to ensuring lower yields but excellent aromatics, and an increasing reserve of old vines, 50 years+.

The soil structure of Alexander Laible’s individual vineyard plots ranges from loose, sandy surface loam-loess soils in Lahr, to limestone clays in northern Ortenau in Sinzheim Baden-Baden, to the stiff and brittle texture of granite in Durbach. These different soils compositions contribute to the wide aromatic expression of Alexander’s wines. Alexander’s Rieslings (50% of total production) are planted on limestone clay on the rising promontory in the northern Ortenau in Sinzheim Baden-Baden. Here Riesling enjoys moderate temperatures, cool nights and sunny days and the soils encourage aromas of yellow flesh fruits.

Alexander’s other white varieties (Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay) are planted on granite soils in Durbach. Here the soils warm up very quickly in springtime so that bud burst takes place two to three days earlier, and higher must weights are guaranteed.

Variety: Pinot Gris 100%

Method: All of Alexander’s white wines are vinified in stainless steel tanks and sealed under screwcap to ensure that the delicate fruit aromas are retained. All wines are fermented with wild yeasts.

Colour: Pale yellow straw in colour.

Bouquet: The bouquet shows refreshing scents of pear with Jonathan and Golden Delicious apples.

Palate: The palate shows great body and flesh, yet retains finesse and elegance throughout. Very long and moreish, great food wine.

Service: Serve lightly chilled with roast veal, pork and chicken. Served with spatzle or potato pancake, a selection of wurst or Black Forest Ham (dry cured, smoked ham) and potato salad. Try with Tuna or Kingfish sushi and sashimi.

Winemaker: Alexander Laible

The * rating on the wines is made personally by Alexander Laible, and represents the perceived and real quality of the wines from vine to bottle, the intensity of the minerality, the spectrum and the diversity of the aromas, and the provenance (best vineyard sites).
