Wine and Winery Information

Ramos Pinto Porto Tawny

Adriano Ramos Pinto founded the house in 1880 and the excellent quality of the wines soon gained recognition on the export market. Adriano’s business foresight made him something of a pioneer in the Port market whereby he supported the promotion of his wines with a quality advertising campaign based on posters designed by some of the most famous artists of his time.

Today, as majority shareholders, the Louis Roederer family group perpetuates the policy of quality by way of substantial investment in advanced technology and viticultural methods combined with respect for tradition and service.

Among Port producers, Ramos Pinto has the largest holding of estate vineyards proportionate to wine produced. The Quintas are located in the delimited areas of Cima-Corgo for Quinta do Bom-Retiro and Quinta do Urtiga, and Douro Superior for Quinta da Ervamoira.

Some 90 kilometres upstream from the Atlantic mouth of the Douro River, the beginning of the Port district is marked by a 1400 metre high mountain, the north-south orientation of which protects the area from the maritime infl uences. The summers are hot, with low rainfall overall, falling mostly in the cold winter months. Port may only be produced in the Delimited Region which extends up the Douro Valley to the Spanish border, as far as the schistose soil persists. The vineyards are generally on steep slopes varying from 30% to 70% gradient.

In 1976, Ramos Pinto began a detailed and ongoing research project to select the best grape varieties for the production of quality Port. Five varietals selected by Ramos Pinto were subsequently adopted by the Authorities for all new plantings in the region: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz and Tinto Cao.

Following ageing of the two to three years at the lodges in Ramos Pinto’s Quintas in the Douro Valley, the wines acquire a specifi c character. They are then brought down to the Vila Nova de Gaia and blended according to the desired style. Port production is governed by very strict regulations whcih guarantee the authenticity of the wines. The Port Wine Institute grants the producer a certifi cate of origin and a seal of quality only after each blend has been tasted, analysed and approved for export.
