Credaro Five Tales Shiraz 2017

WINEMAKING
Separate blocks of Shiraz from our Summus Vineyard, our Cellar Door Vineyard (Yallingup) and Carbunup River vineyards were destemmed (not crushed) and transferred to static tanks and inoculated immediately with a yeast strain isolated from the Cotes du Rhone. Each tank was pumped over twice daily using a Turbopigeur - a red fermentation pump designed in France that floods the cap with a very gentle pumping action. The wines were fermented on skins to dryness at a maximum of 28°C and pressed after 14 days. The wine was racked to barrel for MLF and was then matured for 10 months in 15% new oak barriques, predominantly French, though with a small proportion of American oak. A wine with intense berry flavour; soft, juicy tannins and finishing with the delicate floral and spice perfumes that cool climate Shiraz is known for.

VINTAGE NOTES
The start to the season was cooler than normal with a wet spring and early summer. The vines then responded well to warming trend through December and January, providing mid-sized canopies with very little amounts of lateral shoot growth. Subsequently these canopies required less maintenance to present fruit yield to canopy ratios for quality fruit. With the cooler conditions meeting us through March, the region, including Credaro, were holding our breath to see if April would follow the trend and boy did April deliver! Only 0.2mm of rain was recorded in April and Cabernet was the flavour of the month. We had an unseasonal warm April that with the cooler ripen through March has led to some outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay batches. Overall, with exceptional crop management and diligent viticultural practices we will see a flavoursome 2017 vintage. The cooler vintage has given abundant natural acidity in physiologically ripe grapes at moderate sugar levels, with very high anthocyanin levels in red wines. The vintage will show very fine, focused and highly aromatic wines with great linear natural acidity giving longevity and class. The 2017 vintage will be another great vintage for Margaret River.

PALATE
Lovely rich red berry, blackberry fruits underpinning a lovely rich savoury black spice tannin. Subtle influence of oak adds structure. Well balanced acidity leads to a plush rich fruit forward wine.

COLOUR
Vibrant crimson red colour with a dense purple hue.

NOSE
Lifted mulberry fruit aromas with hints of dark spice and earthy nuances.
