Wine and Winery Information

Louis Roederer Brut Premier NV

Champagne Louis Roederer, founded in 1776, remains one of the very rare family Champagne businesses. For two centuries, six succeeding generations have been inspired by the same concern for quality. Frederic Rouzaud took up the reins in early 2006 from his father Jean-Claude Rouzaud who remains Chairman of the Board. Jean-Claude, grandson of Madame Camille Olry-Roederer and himself a trained Oenologist had led the company for 38 years, and is referred to as the ‘Sage’ of Champagne (the wise man of Champagne). Frederic has spent the past 10 years working with his father in all areas of production and business and will bring his great business acumen and academic background to the company. Louis Roederer's fundamental advantage lies in its superb 190-hectare vineyard (470 acres) which, on average, rates 97.5% on the official classification scale, and covers the Pinot Noir regions of "Montagne de Reims" and "Valley de la Marne" with Chardonnay from the "Cotes des Blanc".

Technical Details

Grape Varieties: pinot noir 40%, chardonnay 40% & pinot meunier 20%

Terrain: Limestone

Background: The upheavals of the beginning of the 20th century, in particular the First World War which destroyed more than half of the Louis Roederer estate, led Leon Olry Roederer to reconstruct his total vineyard. To ensure continuity during the crisis period, Leon Olry Roederer also began to purchase grapes for the first time. Brut premier incorporates all three Champagne grape varieties from more than 40 different plots. The wine is an assemblage of 6 years of harvest, 5% of which are matured in oak casks with weekly batonnage and 10% coming from the Louis Roederer Reserve Wines, wines from previous great vintages which have been matured in oak casks for several years. The Brut Premier remains on lees for 3 years in the Louis Roederer cellars, and is rested for 6 months after disgorgement prior to release. The dosage is 10 gms per litre.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Pale golden yellow in colour with a delicate persistent bead.

Bouquet: Rich yet subtle bouquet of acacia, almonds and toast.

Palate: The inclusion of reserve wines gives wonderful complexity and roundness to the fresh creamy palate. Champagne Louis Roederer Brut Premier strikes a perfect balance between the structure and fruitiness of the Pinot Noir and the finesse of the Chardonnay. “In the mouth, the wine has structuer, richness and length. It is a full, complex wine that is both modern and powerful, whilst remaining a great classic.” Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon, Chef de Cave.

Service: Serve well chilled. Louis Roederer Brut Premier is a classic aperitif or celebratory Champagne. The fullness and structure make Brut Premier a superb accompaniment to many fine cuisine. Shellfish (lobster), fois gras, natural oysters and sushi/sashimi plus white fish and poultry dishes.
